Many producers may not be aware of the publications currently available on the topics of waste management, water quality and odor control. The North Carolina Division of Environmental Management has issued a pamphlet entitled Water Quality & Waste Management for Livestock Farms in North Carolina. The project was supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the N. C. Pork Producers and the N.C. Poultry Federation. Topics covered in the pamphlet include swine, poultry, and cattle waste BMP's (best management practices), waste handling techniques, and nutrient management techniques. Also, note that as of January 1, 1994, all new or expanded farms must comply with .0200 rule addopted by the Environmenal Management Commission. Furthermore, existing farms with more than animal threshold numbers must have a certified waste management by December 31, 1997.
All county Cooperative Extension Service offices should also have a current copy of the Swine Odor Task Force Report and an accompanying Water Quality Report. The Swine Odor Task Force report provides insight into the nature of the odor problem and means to overcome the problem. The Water Quality report also sheds light on the issues surrounding swine production as it relates to water quality. Both publications are very insightful and should provide the swine producer with an understanding of the perceived and real problems associated with raising swine. If you have questions regarding these issues and related written material, please contact you Cooperative Extension Service professional.
