Improved Infant Formulas using a Neonatal Piglet Model

This work examines the safety and efficacy of supplementing infant formulas with new fatty acids that are needed to optimize infant growth and development. Our work utilizes the piglet model. We conducted an experiment to examine the safety and efficacy of two different sources of AA and DHA fatty acids. The following website contains a concise description of the work that was published in several area newspapers and Dr. Odle was interviewed by several radio talkshows. Our research with the piglet model here at NCSU was instrumental in convincing the FDA to approve the inclusion of AA and DHA in formulas. Mead Johnson is now marketing a formula (as of January, 2002) that contains the referenced fatty acids. This information may be accessed at the following website: Mead Johnson Infant Formula
